Children’s author Maurice Sendak dies age 83

Famous Children's Author, Maurice Sendak dies at 83

Children’s author Maurice Sendak has sadly passed away at the age of 83. Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are and We Are All In The Dumps With Jack and Guy along with many, many more children’s classics. Sendak took children’s literature and flipped the entire script. His stories were so unique, somewhat dark and oftentimes a look at the mischievously smart mind of a child. Sendak not only wrote these classics, he also illustrated many of them in his own unique artistic style.

Sendak has left a legacy of literature which will most certainly always have a place in my home.

4th Recap of Aztec Ruins-Photos & more Photos!

Posted by Tomb Raider Lucky # 7 on August 20, 2010 at 7:41 PM Comments comments (0)

This is the inside of the Great Kiva at the Aztec Monument, Aztec, New Mexico!  Very nice and cool in there.

The interior is Adobe stone and plaster, that has been painted white. The floor is a dirt floor. The pit in the center, the one I am looking into, is a fire pit. Above this is a roof opening where the spoke goes out from. I am sure they were very toasty warm in the Great Kiva during Cold & Snowy days!

Here we are coming out of the center of the Great Kiva. Being quiet is very respectful in the Great Kiva. It is believed to be a very spiritual place.

The roof is made of Aspen trees and larger trees for support. This is a very large building.

This is the entrance to the Great Kiva. These are the stairs we just came up in the photo before this one. You can see some type of seat or altar built here in the red paint with the circle on it.

This is the view looking down into the Great Kiva. I will be doing more reading on this Aztec Monument and put some of the information into the FAQ page in my site here.

This is the front entrance to the Great Kiva. The stones that make up the wall are all types of Adobe Clay materials. The green stones have Turquoise in them. They are very cool. Turquoise when it is in rock formation can be made into Jewelry.

Here is a really neat shot of the Anasazi Aztec Ruin National Monument. We are looking down into a smaller Kiva. The next photo below is of the inside of this smaller Kiva.

These are two pieces of pottery made by the Anasazi people who lived here long ago. I think they are very pretty.

Below is the nice woman who works at the Visitors Center. She was very nice and helpful. She knows a lot about the Aztec Ruin Monument.

There is a museum in the Visitors Center. It is included in the admission cost. There are many artifacts and lots of interesting information in the museum. Don't forget to see the movie on the Anasazi people, there is much to see here.

I was very tired and hot after my outing. It was nice to lay down on the cool floor while CJ & Matt watched the video in the museum. We had a great day. We learned many cool things. I suggest you visit there when you are in Aztec, New Mexico.  Your Adventurous Friend, Raider

3rd Recap of Anastazi Aztec Ruins, New Mexico

Hi Everyone!

Back at the Great Kiva is where we will begin todays photo trip. This is the West Ruin at Azted Ruins National Monument.

This is the back side of the Great Kiva.  This Great Kiva was restored by a team of Museum of Natural History workers under the direction of Mr. Earl H. Morris (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/hh/36/hh36b-3.htm    this is a photo of Mr. Morris' home which is now the Visitor's Center)

Day 2 recap of Aztec Ruins

This is a Cotton Tail Rabbit. Just like the one in Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit! This rabbit was hopping all over the Aztec Ruins. I saw him out the back door of the Great Kiva.

This is a piece of Anasazi pottery. It looks to be a drinking container like our water bottles of today.

Cj and I are looking down through 4 rooms in the large living complex. The floors were dirt and the walls were all hand made stones with adobe mud mortar. Some of the doorways still had ancient wood . These rooms are several thousands of years old.

I hope you have enjoyed my photos for today. I will post more photos tomorrow.

Some of you have started School this week and I wish you all will have a terrific school year!

Raider

Fee Free National Parks Day

Posted by Gemstones by D.Sign CJ on August 16, 2010 at 12:50 AM Comments comments (0)

Hi Everyone!

We have returned from our day trip for the

Fee Free National Parks Day @ Aztec National Monument, New Mexico.

It was very cool to visit the Aztec Ruins in Aztec, NM.

It was a bright sunny day and it was a nice day.

I have some photos to share with you!

I met nice people.  We went into a the really big "Great Kiva".

Some animal friends said hello! A Cotton Tail Rabbit and

a Brown Lizard.

I watched a movie on the Anasazi People of Aztec long ago.

These people lived, worked and played here in what is now

the Ancient Aztec Ruins. I hope you enjoy my photo journey!

Fee Free National Parks Day @ Aztec National Monument, New Mexico August 14 &15, 2010

                                                                    "Information Center"

Matt, me and CJ walking up to the Information Center.

On our adventure, we sometimes have to take different paths because of CJ's difficulty walking, climbing stars, going up hills, bending down into small doorway spaces, walking on different terrain, etc.

Our Aztec Ruins Adventure started backwards from the way the usual self-tour begins. This was a wise choice for us and for any handicapped individuals who may be interested in taking this tour.

This direction still gave CJ and I the ability to see and experience the ruins first hand.

Above is Matt/Dad coming out of one of the inner rooms. I wonder how short these Anasazi people were? Dad is just 6 feet tall and had to bend over  to get through the doorways.  CJ and I stayed in the more open areas of the ruins. Matt took photos of the inside of these rooms.  Now we can enjoy the whole tour!

My new people friends who were also visiting the Aztec Ruins!  Thank you for letting Matt take your photo.  Raider

Inside the Great Kiva; large, flat, round rocks.  They smelled like ancient rocks

.

Enjoying some cold water during a walking/working break.  Yum!

.

This is me, Raider, showing CJ I am very happy to be here today.

CJ is happy when I work hard and listen to her commands.

That is all for today.

Join us again for more of

Raider on the Go! tomorrow, Monday, August 16th.

Thank you for coming along on today's outing

to the Aztec Ruins~Aztec, New Mexico.
